Introduction To Mumbai Metro Line 9 (Red Line)
The Mumbai Metro Red Line, consisting of lines 7, 7A, and 9, is currently in the process of being built. This metro system will run both above the ground and below it, covering a total distance of 31.05 kilometres. It is designed to connect several important areas in Mumbai, including Mira Bhayandar, Dahisar East, Andheri East, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Terminal 2, with a total of 23 stations along the way.
The ownership of the Red Line falls under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). To manage and ensure the smooth operation of all Mumbai Metro services, a new organisation called the Maha Mumbai Metro Operations Corporation (MMMOCL) was established in June 2019. This corporation is responsible for maintaining the metro services on all the lines that belong to MMRDA.
To oversee the development of Line-7, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) acted as the interim consultant. This arrangement was formalised through an agreement signed between MMRDA and DMRC back in 2015.
Latest News On Mumbai Metro 9: Red Line
May 07, 2025: Metro Line 9, extending from Dahisar East to Kashigaon, will begin train trials on May 10 after completing overhead electrification. Over 85 per cent of civil and system work is done, and the line is set to launch Phase I by year-end to improve connectivity in the western suburbs and reduce reliance on the suburban railway.
In the initial operational stretch, four stations, Dahisar East, Pandurang Wadi, Mira Gaon, and Kashigaon, will open for commuters. The remaining four, Sai Baba Nagar, Meditya Nagar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Garden, and Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium, are planned for the second phase. Once completed, the corridor will provide direct Metro connectivity from Andheri (Western Express Highway) to Bhayandar West.
2022:
As of 2022, only one phase of the Red Line Metro project (Line 7) has been inaugurated. The next significant step in this expansive undertaking involves the construction of Red Line Route 7A, connecting Andheri East to CSIA Terminal 2, and Line 9, linking Dahisar East to Mira Bhayandar.
Upon the completion of these phases, the Red Line Metro will extend to a total length of 31.05 kilometres, encompassing a network of 23 stations. This development marks a significant enhancement in Mumbai’s metro connectivity, benefitting the city and its commuters.
Overview Of The Mumbai Metro Red Line Route
Mumbai’s Red Line Metro expansion, referred to as Line 9, is an exciting development that will span a distance of 11.38 kilometres. Currently, this extension is in the active construction phase, with a predominant focus on elevated infrastructure. The project will introduce a total of 7 stations, strategically positioned to offer convenient transportation options throughout the city.
The estimated cost for the combined undertaking of Line-7A and Line-9 is approximately Rs. 6,518 crore. This significant investment is expected to yield substantial improvements in citywide connectivity, making public transportation more accessible and convenient for the residents of Mumbai.
